Notes on 'The Timeless Way of Building' by Christopher Alexander. This quality is objective and precise, but it cannot be named.” (19). This is one of my favorite books because it explains so clearly the process and intention for building or constructing things that live and things that matter. From The Timeless Way of Building: “There is a central quality which is the root criterion of life and spirit in a man, a town, a building, or a wilderness. €�A pattern language gives each person who uses it, the power to create an infinite variety of new and unique buildings…” - Chapter 10, opening page. The Timeless Way of Building and A Pattern Language were written as a pair, with the former presenting rationale and method, and the latter concrete details. Still, the main purpose of the book is as an introduction to A Pattern Language. A beautiful place, blessed with a fine canal and some beautiful old buildings.
